Pandit Nehru

The first Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Nehru, said

"Politics and religion are obsolete; the time has come for science and spirituality. I regard that as my guiding light."

Obviously we disagree with this but I'm surprised that a national leader could think this. An interesting (to me) statement - does it have any merit? Was he a smart man to say it or stupid? Is he evil or good (or neither) in making this comment?
