Spacetime Continuum

1. Define it
   
2. Describe how something could be outside it

What I'm getting at is whether the definition of "spacetime continuum" is sufficiently broad and elastic that it's hard to conceive of anything being outside it. If it is possible to conceive of something outside it, I'd like to hear a description of how that might work.
